For a weekend escape from home we chose the Sofitel Le Grand Ducal in Luxembourg City. Ever since its opening in 2008 we wanted to stay overnight to enjoy the hotel’s incredible views over the City.
After a short drive from home, we arrive at the hotel and rush into the lobby where the typical Sofitel fragrance makes us feel familiar right away. We are welcomed by a friendly receptionist who takes care explaining the hotel facilities. The concierge can help if you are visiting Luxembourg or need recommendations. Public parking is available right next to the hotel or you can leave your car with the valet.
A Room with a view….
We have two adjacent rooms on the sixth floor. The room is well laid out and the lighting very cozy. As soon as we enter, we are mesmerised by the stunning views over the city, the Valley and Kirchberg. Defintitely one of the best “rooms with a view” ever.
On the desk, a big fruit basket, juices and chocolates are waiting for us, while the kids are treated to Le Petit Prince toys, pencils, coloring books and candy in their room. The minibar at the Sofitel Le Grand Ducal is complementary and offers still, sparkling and flavored water. A Nespresso machine is also at your disposal.
The bathroom features a large shower with light therapy, a sink with plenty of space for your toilet kit, Hermès amenities, bathrobes and slippers. There are several mirrors and even from the shower you can enjoy the view of the city. The toilet is separate.
The Bar… L’Observatoire
The views from the bar are equally in-cre-dible. We are lucky enough to score a table for 4 by the window. The service is attentive and we get our drinks quickly. What a treat to enjoy a glass of white wine and luxembourgish Crémant with this view. The drinks come with a selection of Bretzels, olives and nuts.
After the drink at the bar we move to the adjacent restaurant, l’Etoile. Hubby orders a tasty Tuna steak while the three of us have a Club Sandwich (not on the restaurant menu, but is featured in the room service)
Only the boys have room for dessert. After a galette des rois and a mousse au chocolat, it’s time to call it a night. We look forward to having breakfast in the same venue in the morning.
Breakfast with a view…
Breakfast is served at l’Etoile. It is a huge buffet breakfast and what strikes us, is the choice of healthy options. Of course, besides the tasty food, it’s again the views of the city that make this place unique. The waiting staff do their best to accomodate us on a table near the window. In addition to the buffet, you can order eggs any style and pancakes. This isn’t really advertised, but now you know 🙂
We notice that outside guests are coming here for breakfast. The buffet lasts until 11am on weekends but even after 11 we are never rushed out.
Small but convenient, the Fitness features Technogym equipment and is open 24h 7/7.
What we enjoyed the most
• The views (you won’t find a hotel with better views in a 400km range)
• Free mini bar
• Fast and reliable internet connection
What we liked less
• We missed floor-to-ceiling windows in the room. But then we probably would have moved in permanently.
• Book a room with City and Valley views and ask for a high floor
