Where to eat like a local in Lisbon?

1. Leitaria A Camponeza

This small restaurant located in Rua dos Sapateiros is specialised in skewers, “espada” in portuguese, be it fish or meat. As a starter we got some bread, olives and delicious ham that we paired with a bottle of white portuguese wine. The Mister ordered a wild shrimp skewer, while I had the mixed meat. The seasoning and cooking of both dishes were perfect. We also got fried potatos, rice and a salad on the side. Portions are really huge! I couldn’t finish the skewer! As a dessert we could chose between a chocolate cake and a glass of Port wine. Mr. A got both as I was really full! The set menu (starter-main-dessert) is at 15/17 euros- a bargain for this delicious and plenty food!

2. Restaurante O Chiado

O Chiado is a family run restaurant specialised in portuguese cuisine, like Bacalhau (cod) or Polvo a Lagareiro (octopus with potatoes). Like in every traditional restaurant you’ll get some bread olives an ham to start your meal. We ordered a piece of beef, that came with homemade fries and oddly, fruits. We kept them for the dessert. Fun part of the meal is that you get a piece of rare beef on a hot stone and you cook it yourself! As seasoning we had salt, minced garlic and a delicious garlic mayonaise. We paired the meal with a bottle of Douro red wine. The son who serves in the restaurant kept us entertained, which along the delicious food made up for a great evening in Lisbon.

3. Bastardo

You’ll most likely walk past this restaurant unnoticed. It is on the first floor of the Internacional Design Hotel near Plaza Rossio on the corner of rua Augusta and Betesga. It is a very stylish restaurant where no two chairs are the same and funny posters are on the wall. Dishes are served in Casseroles. We also had a buffet style breakfast here. The jams and juices are homemade and delicious. The price/ quality ration is excellent!
