Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort Siem Reap, Cambodia

For our stop in Cambodia during our trip around the world, we chose the Sofitel Angkor in Siem Reap. The hotel is centrally located on Charles de Gaulle avenue, only minutes away from the lively city center on one hand and the peaceful Angkor temples on the other. For details about how to arrive in Cambodia, you can read our post about Siem Reap with kids. (to come)

After a 25- minute ride by taxi, we arrived at the Sofitel Angkor. The arrival is always quite important to us, as it is the first impression you get on a hotel. And, to say the least, we were not disappointed. As soon as we got out of the van, we were warmly greeted by the staff. We could feel that we were really welcome. We walked through the impressive lobby and arrived at the bar where they offered us a welcome drink. Alexandre and Chloé received a handmade straw hat that proved to be very usefull during our stay in Cambodia.

Soon after, we were escorted to our Suite. Walking through the gardens and over the bridge gave us yet another glimpse of what to expect at the Sofitel: peace and serenity. Everything was super well maintained. It was always a pleasure to walk through the resort.

Sofitel Angkor Prestige Suite

Our suite was located on the ground level. It included a nice entrance foyer with a bar with free water, coffee and tea. The main room had a nice sitting area, a tv (that we didn’t switch on), an extra bed, access to a terrace facing the lake and a separate toilet. The master bedroom was equipped with a king size bed, a desk, a sofa, and had as well a dedicated terrace with access to the garden. The bathroom featured a bath tub, large shower and Hermes amenities. The kids were thrilled to find lovely and delicious welcome treats in their room. The housekeeping staff did a great job in keeping our room immaculate during the entire stay.

Sofitel Angkor Restaurants and Bars

The Sofitel Angkor has a very nice and cozy bar, and like every worthy bar, there’s a hidden treasure: a separate wine cellar.

The hotel has three on site restaurants, but we always had breakfast and dinner in the main restaurant: The Citadel. For dinner you can chose between a buffet with live cooking stations or an Ă  la carte menu. As we like to stay seated without one of us always missing at the table, we opted for the Ă  la carte. We chose mostly Asian dishes because we want to eat local food when we travel. The dishes were always fresh and tasty, we were never disappointed. The wine list is well furnished and prices very affordable. On Monday, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7.30 you can enjoy dinner with a traditional “Apsara” dance performance.

Sofitel Angkor offers also a dedicated children’s menu:

Our mornings started with a huge buffet breakfast with about everything one can wish for from local, asian and western. The kid’s favorite were the pancakes served with Nutella. Now that we have talked about food, let’s talk about service. It was simply outstanding in every aspect, from the welcome into the restaurant, until the end. The staff was really friendly, and extremely professional. They were always attentive to the smallest details, making our experience amazing. For us, service at the Sofitel was definitely on par with European Michelin star restaurants. The staff was expert in serving, timing, attentiveness, friendliness, and you could really feel that it was sincere. A special thank you to Sokchum, who served us every evening.

Sofitel Angkor Pool

The pool was located in the middle of a lush garden. Wooden sunbeds are disposed along the pool, far enough away from each other, to keep everyone’s privacy. Next to the huge pool, is a jacuzzi, a toddler pool and a small slide to keep the kids entertained. Alexandre and Chloé had a lot of fun there, as pool-time was always the reward after a day of visiting temples. The swim up bar serves delicious drinks and snacks.

Kids at Sofitel Angkor

Besides a dedicated Kids Villa where kids can play with toys, the hotel offers two complimentary activities, and what activities!

Firstly, children can fish in the hotel’s lake. The staff prepares bamboo sticks, fishing rods, bread and a basket with fresh water, and off you go! It was a lot of fun for the kids as they caught their first Tilapias. And the best is that after the fishing session, the fish were brought to the chef to be prepared for dinner!

The second activity is a two- hour treasure hunt through the resort called “The Explorer’s Challenge“. Kids get a map and a booklet with 8 enigmas that they have to solve, mostly about Cambodia. One for example, was to smell perfumes and find out to which flower this perfume corresponds. When an enigma is solved, they get a stamp in their booklet, and at the very end, they will find the treasure. We will not reveal what it is, you’ll have to find out by yourself 🙂

If your children are tired of visiting temples or if you want to have a romantic dinner, the hotel offers a babysitting service.

What we enjoyed the most

• Outstanding friendliness, politeness, professionalism of every staff member, be it in the restaurant, at the lobby or the resort. There were no exceptions. As an example, during our 5- night stay, we never had to open a door by ourself, there was always staff jumping to open it for us before we even had a chance to reach it. Same when we returned from our daily excursions. There was always someone in front of the hotel to welcome us back and ask how our day went.

• Serenity and privacy at the pool and the resort in general

• Food quality in the restaurant and outstanding service

• Spacious suite

• Nice and very well maintained surroundings

• Location

• very family friendly

What we liked less

Honestly? Nothing. Well, apart from the fact that we had to leave after five days to continue our trip. We wish we could have stayed a longer.

To conclude, you won’t be surprised that we highly recommend the Sofitel Angkor for a stay in Siem Reap. Sofitel Angkor is without a doubt among our favourite hotels ever!
