Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts in Gérardmer Review

It is not usual that snow conditions still permit skiing in the Vosges mid- march. As it was the case this year, we didn’t think twice and booked a two night stay in Gérardmer and more precisely at Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts.

Hostellerie les Bas Rupts Relais & Châteaux in Gérardmer

While we have stayed in Gérardmer before, this was our first time at this Relais & Châteaux located outside the town. We wanted to stay here a long while ago but somehow we always ended up at le Grand Hotel, right in the center.

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – The Room

The welcome was basic and we were immediately taken to the room. Even though the hotel was empty wasn’t nearly half full, we were given a standard room – no upgrade, no welcome drink whatsoever. Not that we expected any, but we always think that if a hotel is able to do it, why not make a good first impression and please the guests by offering a little extra.

We booked a package that included the night, breakfast and a 3- course dinner. The Room was excessively small and cramped. The Room style as well is not really to our liking but you’re in the mountains so you go with it. What was nice though, was the little terrace where we could enjoy the sun and the fact that the toilet was separate from the bathroom (given such a small room). A complimentary box of local candies was a nice touch but only 1 small bottle of water for the entire stay (2 nights) is stingy, to say the least. There were absolutely no bathroom amenities available either, apart from a liquid soap/shampoo mass dispenser mounted to the wall.

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – The Pool and Spa

The Pool and Spa area is really small. While we were there, the hotel was almost empty but we can imagine what it must be like during weekends or school holidays. The water temperature of the pool was too chill for us to get in anyway. Bummer is that the Jaccuzzi is included in the pool, so no chance to use that either. We tried the Sauna where you can fit in 2 persons maximum. Needless to say we visited the pool area only once!

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – The Restaurant

The Restaurant is without a doubt the hotel’s main (and maybe only) asset. It is a one star Michelin restaurant and it did not disappoint. We had eaten here a few years ago with our kids (they have a special kids menu) and the food is still as good. The presentation and taste of every dish is really outstanding. It is a pleasure to eat here. The service is very professional too, just as you expect it from such a restaurant.

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – What we enjoyed the most

• Food and Service at the Restaurant

• cozy Bar with fireplace

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – What we liked less

• the unpleasant behaviour of one of the hotel owners regarding the guests

• outdated room and bathroom

• inexistent hotel service especially at breakfast

• poor wifi

• terrible value for money

Hostellerie Les Bas Rupts – Tips

It doesn’t happen often, but we don’t recommend staying at les Bas Rupts. If you want a hotel in the same category, we suggest booking le Grand Hotel or any other hotel in the center of Gérardmer and go to les Bas Rupts only to eat at the restaurant!
