Visiting the Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt with Kids (17.11.2017 – 22.12.2017)

Every year, there’s one thing we won’t miss around Christmas time: it’s the Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt. So on Tuesday afternoon we made our way to Germany. It’s only a 40 minutes drive from our home in Luxembourg.

The advantage of going during the week is that you avoid the crazy traffic to enter the city, the struggle to find a parking spot and the crowds at the market and the streets. Tuesday was a good day, the weather was grey but dry and apart from french school kids and locals, there were not that many people around.

The Christmas market takes place in the city center at two different spots (but very close), on the Hauptmarkt and on the Domfreihof which is at the St. Peter’s Cathedral. Make sure you go into the Cathedral while you’re at the market, the interior is impressive and it’s the oldest church in Germany.

At the many wooden stalls you can find all kinds of Christmas articles such as wooden toys, candles, hand-blown glassware, gift articles, decorations and much more.

For the little ones there are 2 merry-go-rounds, a puppet theatre and a nativity scene. While we were there, Santa was meeting kids and giving out some treats!

If you’re hungry, you won’t be starving! Why not try a bratwurst sausage with potato pancakes and a mulled wine? There are plenty options for sweets as well.

There’s a nice ice skating rink at the Kornmarkt. Just walk down the Fleischstrasse and you’ll see it on your left.

The Christmas market in Trier might not be biggest in Germany but it is certainly one of the nicest. The size of the market makes it especially pleasant if you are visiting with kids. You’ll have a great time, for sure!
